The poultry industry has evolved from a small backyard enterprise into one of India’s most organized and technologically advanced livestock sectors. During the past five decades, the industry has consistently demonstrated resilience by achieving annual growth rates that surpass many other agricultural enterprises. Today, poultry contributes substantially to national food security by supplying affordable, high-quality animal protein through eggs and chicken meat while simultaneously generating employment opportunities across production, feed manufacturing, hatcheries, processing, logistics, retailing, and allied industries.

India ranks among the world’s largest producers of eggs and broiler meat, with an estimated poultry population exceeding one billion birds and an annual egg production exceeding 149 billion eggs. The sector contributes significantly to the agricultural Gross Value Added (GVA), supports millions of direct and indirect livelihoods, and plays an increasingly important role in improving nutritional outcomes, particularly among children, women, and economically weaker sections of society. Rapid urbanization, rising disposable incomes, changing dietary preferences, increased awareness of protein nutrition, expansion of organized retail, and growth of quick-service restaurants have collectively accelerated domestic demand for poultry products.

However, the remarkable progress achieved over the past decades is now being challenged by an unprecedented escalation in production costs. Rising prices of maize, soybean meal, edible oils, vitamins, minerals, vaccines, pharmaceuticals, fuel, electricity, transportation, labour, and packaging materials have significantly reduced profit margins across the poultry value chain. Feed prices, which constitute nearly two-thirds of total production costs, have experienced considerable volatility due to climatic disturbances, competition from ethanol production, fluctuations in international commodity markets, supply chain disruptions, and changing trade policies.

In addition to economic pressures, poultry producers are confronted with emerging challenges including climate change, recurrent outbreaks of avian influenza, antimicrobial resistance, increasing consumer expectations regarding food safety and animal welfare, environmental regulations, and the need for traceability across supply chains. Large-scale integrators coexist with thousands of contract farmers and independent producers, creating an extensive value chain that contributes substantially to the national economy.

Feed manufacturing remains one of the strongest pillars of the poultry sector. Modern feed mills utilize advanced formulation software, quality assurance systems, and nutritional technologies to optimize bird performance while minimizing feed costs. Nevertheless, the industry’s heavy dependence on maize and soybean meal continues to expose producers to commodity price volatility.

The organized poultry sector has increasingly adopted scientific management practices, including controlled-environment housing, precision ventilation, automated feeding systems, computerized environmental monitoring, vaccination programmes, and improved biosecurity protocols.
